Cumbria and Lake District weather

Travel information for the Lake District
Bus, coach or train travel in Cumbria is covered on Public
Transport Info which offers information on planning your journey
using any of these forms of public transport.
There are no airports within the Lake District National Park area (thankfully!),
but if you are flying to the area the nearest ones are Manchester
Airport, which is around an hours drive from the Southern Lakes,
and to the North West there is Newcastle
International.
Attractions and visitor centres
The area is packed full of things to do, here's our selection of some
of the best:
Near Grasmere you can take guided tours of the house and garden of
Dove Cottage, the home of the great Lake District poet, William Wordsworth,
who lived there between 1799 and 1808. Opening hours, prices and other

Trust site.
An historic and unique collection of steam boats can be found in the
Windermere Steamboats
& Museum, where you can also enjoy steam launch trips a Swallows
and Amazons exhibition and a model boats pond.
Families with young children will love the delightful Beatrix
Potter Attraction in Bowness-on-Windermere. Who needs Disney when
you can have Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck, and Mrs Tiggy-winkle and
friends.
For older kids (and the grown-ups) pay a visit to Cars
of the Stars in Keswick and see famous vehicles from TV and film.
Each in their own set you'll find the likes of: Chittty Chitty Bang
Bang, a James Bond Collection, Thunderbirds Rolls Royce, Herbie, Batmobile,
Del Boy's Reliant Robin and many more! Check site for opening times.
Find out about a traditional English industry at the Honister
Slate Mine at Honister Pass. Unusually this Westmorland Green Slate
is mined rather than quarried.
Utterly eccentric and well worth a visit is The
Teapottery who produce amazing, witty and very original designs
for teapots. Teapots in the shape of cakes and cars, beds and cooking
ranges, radios, radiators, pianos and toasters, to name but a few. Venues
in Leyburn and Keswick.
Comedy fans will enjoy a visit to the Laurel
and Hardy Museum in Ulverston, the town where Stanley was born.
Full of Stan and Olly memorabilia, such as letters, photos and personal
items; there is also a small cinema showing films and documentaries.
Cumbria and Lake District excursions and activities
Discover a golf club with outstanding Lakeland views, Keswick
Golf Club offers an opportunity to play golf on a challenging 18
hole parkland course in the heart of the Lake District.
Horse riding and trekking for all ages and abilities at Murthwaite
Green Trekking Centre in Silecroft within the National Park, offering
anything from a gentle walk in the country to an exhilarating gallop
along the beach.
Outdoor activities
in the Lake District from Key Adventures, Activities & Sports who
can sort you out with some absailing, rock climbing, canoeing, raft
building, caving, mountain biking, orienteering, map reading ...
The Lake District offers some excellent mountain biking
terrain and Adventure
Cycling offer guided cycling trips throughout the area, also in
the Eden Valley, in the North Pennines and along the Cumbrian coast.
On the water we reccommend a lake cruise with the Keswick
Launch Company who run cruises on Derwentwater, stopping at various
jetties around the lake. They also hire out rowing boats and self drive
motor boats from the Keswick landings.
