Lake District cottage holiday planning guide

map for lake district cottages and north west englandIf you are planning a cottage holiday in Cumbria and the Lake District the following resources may help. We are building these pages so you will have all the information you need to support your holiday, including weather forecasts and travel information, visitor attractions, activity providers and information about where to eat, drink and find entertainment.

If you know of or run a site you think we should list in this section then please contact us with details.

Cumbria and Lake District weather

Met Office weather reports for the Lake District, providing a current general forecast, plus 5 day forecasts for places within this. Also information on past weather patterns to help you plan the best time for your holiday.

If you are visiting for the hill walking then take a look at the forecasts for the Cumbrian Fells provided by the The Mountain Weather Information Service in PDF format.

Travel information for the Lake District

Bus, coach or train travel in Cumbria is covered on Public Transport Info which offers information on planning your journey using any of these forms of public transport.

There are no airports within the Lake District National Park area (thankfully!), but if you are flying to the area the nearest ones are Manchester Airport, which is around an hours drive from the Southern Lakes, and to the North West there is Newcastle International.

Attractions and visitor centres

The area is packed full of things to do, here's our selection of some of the best:

Near Grasmere you can take guided tours of the house and garden of Dove Cottage, the home of the great Lake District poet, William Wordsworth, who lived there between 1799 and 1808. Opening hours, prices and other details are on the Wordsworth Trust site.

An historic and unique collection of steam boats can be found in the Windermere Steamboats & Museum, where you can also enjoy steam launch trips a Swallows and Amazons exhibition and a model boats pond.

Families with young children will love the delightful Beatrix Potter Attraction in Bowness-on-Windermere. Who needs Disney when you can have Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck, and Mrs Tiggy-winkle and friends.

For older kids (and the grown-ups) pay a visit to Cars of the Stars in Keswick and see famous vehicles from TV and film. Each in their own set you'll find the likes of: Chittty Chitty Bang Bang, a James Bond Collection, Thunderbirds Rolls Royce, Herbie, Batmobile, Del Boy's Reliant Robin and many more! Check site for opening times.

Find out about a traditional English industry at the Honister Slate Mine at Honister Pass. Unusually this Westmorland Green Slate is mined rather than quarried.

Utterly eccentric and well worth a visit is The Teapottery who produce amazing, witty and very original designs for teapots. Teapots in the shape of cakes and cars, beds and cooking ranges, radios, radiators, pianos and toasters, to name but a few. Venues in Leyburn and Keswick.

Comedy fans will enjoy a visit to the Laurel and Hardy Museum in Ulverston, the town where Stanley was born. Full of Stan and Olly memorabilia, such as letters, photos and personal items; there is also a small cinema showing films and documentaries.

Cumbria and Lake District excursions and activities

Discover a golf club with outstanding Lakeland views, Keswick Golf Club offers an opportunity to play golf on a challenging 18 hole parkland course in the heart of the Lake District.

Horse riding and trekking for all ages and abilities at Murthwaite Green Trekking Centre in Silecroft within the National Park, offering anything from a gentle walk in the country to an exhilarating gallop along the beach.

Outdoor activities in the Lake District from Key Adventures, Activities & Sports who can sort you out with some absailing, rock climbing, canoeing, raft building, caving, mountain biking, orienteering, map reading ...

The Lake District offers some excellent mountain biking terrain and Adventure Cycling offer guided cycling trips throughout the area, also in the Eden Valley, in the North Pennines and along the Cumbrian coast.

On the water we reccommend a lake cruise with the Keswick Launch Company who run cruises on Derwentwater, stopping at various jetties around the lake. They also hire out rowing boats and self drive motor boats from the Keswick landings.
