Going wild from a cottage holiday in Scotland
Most
often it's the location that influences where you choose to take your
cottage holiday but we are not all looking for thatched cottages
in pretty English villages or a cottage holiday by the beach. Some people
are attracted by wilderness and wild country and a cottage holiday in
Scotland is the ideal answer. Scotland offers the closest that
we have, in the UK, to genuine wilderness and it has the wildlife to
go with it. David Tomlinson investigates the sort of wildlife and countryside
that the Scottish Highlands can offer on a cottage holiday in Scotland.
Going Wild
Up in the Highlands of Scotland, amongst some of the grandest landscapes
you can find anywhere in Europe, live many special species of birds
and animals, ranging from eagles and wild cats to ospreys and otters.
Many of these creatures are shy, elusive and difficult to see, but with
a little luck and perseverance, it's amazing what you can find.
Easiest of all to see is our largest native land mammal, the red deer.
Widely distributed throughout the Highlands of Scotland, this is the
creature immortalised by the Victorian artist, Landseer, in his portrait,
'Monarch of the Glen'. Landseer's Monarch is a particularly imposing
stag, but as a rule Scottish stags tend to be small, at least by red
deer standards.
