East of England cottages 4 – holiday cottages in Norfolk

Norfolk's best-known holiday destinations are the incomparable wetlands of the Norfolk Broads and the nearby major resort town of Great Yarmouth. You'll also find pleasant smaller seaside towns like Cromer, Sheringham, Wells-next-the-Sea (which isn't quite, any more) and Hunstanton.

The Wash – that strange, square-shaped inlet where it's difficult to see where the land ends and the sea begins – is a mecca for birdwatchers, while the nearby royal retreat of Sandringham will attract some holiday visitors.

The historic city of Norwich (Norfolk and East Anglia's capital city) is a popular holiday destination too. Norwich is known for its splendid 900 year-old Norman cathedral, but is also a great shopping destination and host to events such as the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, a music festival held every May.

Walking in Norfolk is easy and pleasant. A series of 26 circular walks (each around 4 to 6 miles) spans the whole county (see Eastern England resources) and landscapes include coast, marshland, fens, rivers and heathland. There are longer walks too, such as Boudica's Way – a 40 mile footpath linking Norwich to the town of Diss in the south of Norfolk.

Norfolk has an abundance of real 'cottage style' holiday cottages for rent so if your ideal Norfolk holiday cottages are stone built character properties or historic thatched cottages then you're in luck. There are some lovely converted barns and other buildings too, many on farms. These include a converted stable block in the picturesque village of Weybourne, some newly converted barns near Holt in north Norfolk and some very tastefully restored holiday barns near Cromer.

Larger properties include a group of three Victorian cottages close to the the coast at Mundesley, a converted traditional Norfolk barn in Swaffham, and a fabulous 17th century timber-framed longhouse (with cottages plus mediaeval barn for communal use) near Diss in south Norfolk.
