East of England cottages 3 – holiday cottages in Suffolk

Suffolk is most famous for its coastal villages – Aldeburgh, Walberswick and Southwold are prime cottage holiday territory for Londoners. And Lowestoft in North East Suffolk, the most easterly town in the country, is now more holiday seaside resort than fishing port.

Whether the attempt to dub this area of Suffolk the 'Sunrise Coast' will catch on remains to be seen, but it certainly offers fine beaches and makes an excellent seaside cottage holiday destination.

Suffolk towns make good holiday destinations too. Aldeburgh hosts its own festival and carnival. Half the houses in Walberswick are holiday homes, but it's surrounded by 1000 acres of protected heath and marshland – so a good place for walking. Southwold – a pleasant stroll away from Walberswick – is an ancient market town with harbour and yet more beach.

If you're staying in an inland holiday cottage, you'll find pleasant countryside, dotted with villages and hamlets. Most Suffolk towns are small and widely spaced, so there's lots of room for exploring quieter country areas.

Cottage holiday-makers will find the combination of varied coastline and beaches, plus lush countyside inland, make Suffolk a good holiday choice.
